Climate Resilience and Disaster Preparedness

In the shadows of escalating climate change  impacts and the looming spectre of natural disasters, GHS is leading a  compassionate crusade for climate resilience and disaster preparedness  initiatives in India. In a nation marred by vulnerability, GHS has been  advocating for sustainable practices and kindling awareness about the  urgent need for adaptation measures.

India's  diverse landscapes bear the scars of numerous natural disasters,  leaving communities shattered and lives disrupted. The ever-changing  climate patterns intensify these vulnerabilities, demanding not just  action, but empathy.

GHS is tackling climate change and disasters by embracing communities with a compassionate approach:

1. Research and Understanding: Through extensive research we identify vulnerable regions, seeking to  understand not just the risks but the stories, cultures, and lives  affected. Their insights form a bridge between scientific knowledge and  the human experience, guiding sensitive decision-making processes.

2. Empowering Lives: GHS scope of work is not limited to merely educating the masses, we  also empower lives. By engaging with local communities in workshops,  seminars, and heart-to-heart conversations, we attempt to instill hope  and equip individuals with the knowledge to protect their families,  communities, and heritage. These initiatives are not just about  imparting information; they are about building resilience with  compassion.

3. Building Human Bonds: GeoHazards Society focuses on building human bonds alongside disaster  resilience. By fostering connections within communities and bridging  gaps between authorities and the vulnerable, they create a network of  compassion and support, ensuring that disasters don’t impact the mental  health of the community and especially the highly vulnerable sections of  society.

4. Support with Sentiment: Our collaborations with policymakers are not just about policies; they  are about the lives these policies touch. Our advocacy is rooted in  empathy, ensuring that the voices of the vulnerable are not just heard  but truly listened to, leading to policies that are not just effective  but also humane.

GHS since its inception has attempted to ensure that the impact  of our activities goes beyond statistics and it touches lives and mends  spirits. By empowering vulnerable communities and embracing them with  knowledge and compassion we have been trying to transform fear into  courage, despair into hope, and vulnerability into capacities.

Our  work is not limited to building resilience but also nurturing the human  spirit, inspiring change that is not just impactful but profoundly  sensitive to the needs of every individual.

Climate Resilience and Heat Trends in Kerala (2022-2024)

Rapid urbanization and development have increased Kerala’s vulnerability to heatwaves, necessitating urgent action. In collaboration with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), GeoHazards Society (GHS), GeoHazards International (GHI), and Woodwell Climate Research Center conducted a series of initiatives from 2022-2024 to assess heat risks, develop mitigation strategies, and disseminate critical findings. The project included online training programs for local government professionals, the development of heat projection maps to update the State’s Heat Action Plan, and a consultation workshop bringing together key stakeholders.  Additionally, multilingual IEC materials on heat stress, available in Malayalam, Hindi, Bangla, and English, were released by Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan in January 2025. These resources provide practical heat protection tips for vulnerable groups and can be downloaded for free here. (English, Bangla, Hindi, Malayalam, Assamese)
